Grants Available for Defensible Spaces

Rural Residents Eligible for Community Wildfire Grants

Rural residents seeking assistance in reducing fuel hazards around their homes to mitigate wildfire risks may qualify for up to $4,000 in support from Lane County.

This program does not require property owners to cover any of the cost.

The primary focus of this grant initiative is to create a defensible space of 50 feet around residences by clearing vegetation. Eligibility is limited to residents in unincorporated areas of Lane County, with priority given to those who are elderly, low-income, disabled, or otherwise vulnerable and residing in high-risk zones.

Lane County is currently accepting interest forms until February 29, 2024, designed to be straightforward and quick for applicants to complete. Selected property owners will be contacted by Lane County to arrange a site visit before commencing any work during the spring and summer of 2024.

What does the grant cover?

The grants will provide up to $4,000 per selected property to help create 50 feet of defensible space around homes by removing or pruning vegetation.

Lane County will select a contractor to perform the work and pay the contractor directly. Property owners will not be responsible for selecting or paying a contractor.

Who is eligible for the grant?

Any Lane County resident living in an unincorporated area can apply.

Preference will be given to people who are elderly, low-income, disabled or otherwise vulnerable and who live in an area at risk of wildfire.

Renters may apply; however, permission from the property owner is required before work can begin.

What is the timeline?

Applications are due February 29, 2024

Lane County is currently working to select a contractor. Work will begin in spring and summer of 2024.

The grants must be complete by the end of 2025 and the goal is to move as quickly as the work allows.

Funding for this initiative is derived from a grant bestowed upon Lane County by the Oregon State Fire Marshal.
